Chez Porky’s
Ribs, Wings & Cajun Things
A Restaurant Review
By Rocco A. Quaglia
Tucked away just off South Cypress Road on SW 6th Street is a Pompano Beach jewel called Chez Porky’s. For over 27 years owners Dario Dziamalek and Thomas Douglas have been serving local residents with some of the finest and freshest cuisine that deserves your attention. Don’t be fooled by the low-key exterior, for
within its walls you’ll be amazed. Fast courteous service in a Louisiana style décor is what you’ll find. All of the ingredients are fresh and homemade for flavor. They make all their own sauces, dressings, soups, sides, deserts and more. Chez Porky’s offers lots of special original dishes that will delight and awaken your taste buds. The Caribbean Coconut Soup (C $4.95, B $6.95) is an original recipe that was featured in the Sun Sentinel. The soup is made in a base of Coconut milk infused with curry, ginger and cayenne pepper. Large chunks of fresh chicken, large imported mushrooms, chopped red peppers and scallions make this soup delicious and the most popular. Their Cajun Style Chicken Gumbo (C $4.95, B $6.96) is also a favorite.
For appetizers try the Shrimp-On-A-Stick ($7.95), fresh bacon wrapped shrimp prepared with your choice of blackened, BBQ or raspberry dressing cooked on a wooden skewer, served over a bed of rice. The sweet taste of the homemade fresh raspberry dressing coupled with the thin bacon wrapped around every tender shrimp will cause you to order more. Another favorite are the farm-raised New Zealand Mussels (10pc. $7.95, 20pc $13.95) prepared blackened or steamed with Cajun-spiced butter. These succulent gems smothered with Cajun-spiced butter are worth waiting for; you’ll lick your fingers twice.
For the entrée try the highly recommended Shrimp & Scallops Zingara over Pasta ($19.95). This is a large bowl of succulent fresh shrimp, huge tender sea scallops sautéed in a white wine sauce with artichoke hearts, fresh mushrooms, and sun-dried tomatoes with a touch of butter and served over a bed of linguine that will leave your eyes and your mouth in a state of euphoria. This is a dish you will want to enjoy over and over again. If you want some tender finger licking good meat, try the Combo Ribs & Chicken ($15.95) or a Whole Rack of Barbeque Baby Back Ribs ($18.95), either way you’ll enjoy the goodness of their tender Ribs coupled with the tasted homemade BBQ or Raspberry sauce. It’s so tasty you’ll want to bring some home with you too.
Make sure you leave room for their awesome heated Kentucky Derby Pie ($6.95). This large slice of a special recipe chocolate chip cookie dough and coconuts, will give you a warm, soft and sweet desert that’s best ala mode with fresh whipped cream. The homemade Key Lime Pie ($5.95) is also another great hit at Chez Porky’s.
To cure your summer blues, visit Chez Porky’s today where you’ll want to eat until it hurts. If you’re having a Party Chez Porky’s delivers and will cater any occasion. Check out their entire menu at www.chezporkys.com you’ll be glad you did.

Lito’s Turf And Surf
A Restaurant Review
By Rocco A. Quaglia
Tucked away on a corner in the Shoppes at Beacon Light of Lighthouse Point, lays a pearl of a Fine Neighborhood Grill Lito’s Turf and Surf. You may not know it from the outside but owners Don and Joan Hoy have built quite a reputation serving great food. Don Hoy started as a busboy at Dan Dowd’s Steakhouse in Plantation and went on to become head chef for most of the 80’s. In 1992 the Hoy’s purchased Landlubbers in Plantation and after 20 great years as a team they have sold it. In October 2011 the Hoy’s opened Lito’s bringing their talent together once again, along with their 3 sons for a true family restaurant. Don managed to break away from his Kitchen duties a few times to let me in on some other secrets. Some of his staff has been with him for 30 and 40 years, that says a lot about Don’s character, goodwill and genuine friendliness. If you get a chance, ask to see Don, you’ll love him as well as the food at Lito’s. As for service, it’s quick and friendly. Our server was Leigh; she’s been working with Don for 26 years, and will treat you like a friend too.
Well let’s talk about the food, oh was it great. We started with some Seafood Chowder ($4.99 a bowl) which was filled with tender bite sized bits of fish and vegetables that melted as my taste buds tingled with a bit of spice that danced across my mouth. We also tried the Conch Chowder ($4.99 a bowl) which was overflowing with tasty morsels of conch in a delicious creamy soup that was heaven sent. For the appetizer we were served their phenomenal Tsunami Salad ($12.95); which is thinly sliced fresh sesame seared tuna and tender marinated calamari delicately placed over a seaweed salad and then topped with a sweet & spicy plum sauce. This dish will truly make your mouth water and holler for more.
If you like it fried, try some Fresh Fried Ipswich Clams which are flown in from Boston or Fresh Fried Oyster Baskets ($9.95 per basket), once you’ve tasted these fine juicy delights you’ll want to feast on them regularly. If you crave some carbs, you’ll have to try their Homemade Maine Lobster Roll Sandwich ($11.95), undoubtedly the best Lobster Sandwich I’ve ever had. It’s simply the freshest Maine Lobster mixed with their secret blend of spice and dressing then placed inside a crusty roll. That’s going to be my favorite luncheon meal.
For the main course we had the Seafood Trio ($16.95) which included Fresh Shrimp, Mussels and Clams over a bed of al dente Linguini in a Scampi sauce with just the right amount of garlic and spice, so that the freshness of the shellfish was uncompromised. You may also enjoy this dish made with Marinara or a Spicier Fra Diavolo Sauce if you wish. As we are also meat lovers, we were served the Special, a Rib and Wing Combo ($13.99), that’s a half rack of Tender Fall Off the Bone BBQ Ribs, 6 Wings spiced to your liking, and a large order of fries. I’m going for the Full Rack BBQ Ribs ($18.95) next time, they were just so good.
And make sure you leave room for desert, this is mandatory! Joan Hoy makes the best Homemade Creamy Key Lime Pie ($4.99) that is to die for. It’s a large wedge of cold creamy key lime filling over a candy like brown sugar and walnut crust, topped with whipped cream and a lime slice. You’ll want to lick the dish, it’s that good.
For more information go to their website www.litosturfandsurf.com where you can download their entire Menu, Wine, Beer and Microbrew Lists and learn more about Lito’s. Hope to see you there for Happy Hour Monday through Saturday from 3 to 6 pm.
I wish you all a Bon Appetite.
